~ About Cavaliers ~
(taken from the AKC website)
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an elegant, energetic toy breed that is compatible for city or country life. Successful in conformation shows, obedience and agility, they also make wonderful therapy dogs due to their sweet, gentle natures.  Their silky coats come in four colors – Blenheim (chestnut and white), Tricolor (black, white, and tan), Ruby (solid red) and Black and Tan.

A Look Back
For centuries, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (a namesake of King Charles II of Britain) has been recorded in paintings and tapestries together with their aristocratic families. It is obvious from these works of art that Cavaliers were a luxury item and lived "the easy life" as housepets. Though used successfully for shooting small game, the Cavalier’s true purpose has always been that of companion.

Right Breed for You?
Friendly and easy to train, the Cavalier is a trustworthy companion for children and thrives as part of a family. The coat requires weekly brushing, but no trimming. The breed is adaptable in their need for exercise, happy with either sleeping on the couch or taking long walks.

~ What are show/hobby breeders, backyard breeders and commercial breeders? ~
Many people become confused about breeders, what is a good breeder, how to find a quality puppy, and why show breeders try so hard to encourage pet buyers to buy their pups from a reputable, hobby/show breeder.

~Backyard breeders - Backyard breeders, also called "BYB's" are generally pet owners who breed their pets.  They often know little about the breed standard, pedigree, or health of the dogs in the pedigree.  They are pets they chose to breed because they thought it would be fun to have puppies, they think their dog is cute and has "papers", or because they thought they could make some money selling the puppies.  Unfortunately, since they are very inexperienced, they are generally breeding poor quality dogs, dogs with faults, or dogs with health problems that they don't know about, since they don't screen the parents or know anything about the pedigrees they are putting together.  Indiscriminate breeding, on a large scale, can all but destroy a breeds look, or reputation.  Within just a couple generations, poorly bred "purebred" dogs, end up looking and acting very different from their counterparts being bred by a responsible show breeder.

~Commercial breeders - Commercial breeders are large operations, they may be clean and well-run, or what is known as "puppy mills", which are breeding mills that poorly house and poorly care for the dogs and puppies they produce.  Even well-run commercial breeders are simply producing puppies purely for monetary gains, they are not concerned with breed standard, or betterment of the breed.  The dogs live  entirely in a kennel situation and not in a home or around a family.  On the worst end would be puppy mills, which churn out sickly, poor quality puppies that are raised in horrible conditions, rarely allowed out of a cage or socialized.  Sadly, most pet stores are selling these puppy mill or commercial bred pups.  Most are overpriced, poor quality puppies. NEVER BUY A PET STORE PUPPY!

~Show/Hobby Breeders - Show breeders may have only a few, or many dogs.  Most of the time they are raised in and around the family.  Since show/hobby breeders spend many hours of their day with their dogs, it is very important to them that the dogs have great temperaments, and excellent health.  Hobby breeders love their dogs and their breed, and have a great desire to improve upon the breed, over many years.  They will spend countless hours researching pedigrees.  Most have mentors that have been involved with the breed for years and years, they will health test the parents for genetic faults found in their breed, and will know the health status of grand-parents, and possibly great-grandparents of the puppies.  They belong to, and are involved in breed clubs.  They show their dogs and puppies, in order to be sure they are breeding toward the breed standard.  After all, the standard is what makes that breed special!   They charge a bit more than a "BYB" but usually less than a pet store puppy, and offer a lifetime of support for your puppy.  Almost ALL show/hobby breeders require their pet puppies be spayed or neutered, in order to protect the breed.

~ Don't be in a hurry to buy the quickest puppy you can find!!  A Cavalier puppy will be a part of your family for many years.  It's worth waiting a few months to get a puppy from a breeder you like and trust!  Pick the breeder first, then the puppy!
